The American Equestrian Guild Academy

The American Equestrian Guild Academy

The American Equestrian Guild Academy is a comprehensive system of equestrian education designed to develop knowledgeable, skilled, responsible, and thoughtful horsemen and horsewomen.

The Academy recognizes that true horsemanship is more than the ability to ride. It encompasses an understanding of the horse, practical skills, training theory, horse health and welfare, teaching, stable management, and the business and culture of the equestrian world.

I.

Initiation

The beginning of the equestrian journey.

The student develops fundamental knowledge, safety awareness, practical skills, and respect for the horse. The goal is to become a responsible and confident participant in the equestrian environment.

Guild Rank: Apprentice
II.

Improvement

The development of competence.

The student moves beyond the fundamentals to develop greater skill, understanding, consistency, independence, and responsibility. They begin to understand not only what to do, but why it works.

Guild Rank: Ranger
III.

Specialization

The development of expertise.

The student begins to pursue areas of particular interest or ability, developing advanced knowledge and skills within a chosen discipline or area of equestrian practice. They learn to evaluate problems, make informed decisions, and accept greater responsibility for horses and people.

Guild Rank: Paladin
IV.

Mastery

The development of leadership and stewardship.

The student demonstrates a level of knowledge, judgment, skill, and character that allows them to teach, mentor, lead, and contribute to the advancement of equestrian sport and horsemanship.

Guild Rank: Guild Master

The Guild recognizes that mastery may take many forms. A Master may be distinguished as a rider, trainer, teacher, breeder, horseman, horsewoman, manager, researcher, or leader. Mastery is not defined solely by competitive achievement, but by the ability to combine knowledge, skill, judgment, ethics, and service.

The journey of the Guild member is therefore not simply from beginner to advanced rider. It is a progression:

Apprentice → Ranger → Paladin → Guild Master
Initiation → Improvement → Specialization → Mastery
Knowledge → Skill → Judgment → Stewardship

The ultimate purpose of the American Equestrian Guild Academy is to develop people who understand that horsemanship is both an art and a responsibility—and who are prepared to carry that knowledge forward for the benefit of the horse, the rider, and the future of equestrian sport.

Your Path Through The Guild

Each stage of the Academy — Initiation, Improvement, Specialization, and Mastery — is supported by a dedicated curriculum built around the Guild's six areas of expertise: Mounted Practice, Groundwork Training, Theory of the Equestrian Arts, Veterinary & Farrier Care, Teaching Theory & Course Design, and Stable Management & Horse Business.

What the Curriculum Includes

Written & Video Materials

Each stage includes structured written resources and video instruction across all six disciplines — designed for self-paced learning that meets the student where they are.

Assessments

Students complete assessments at each stage to demonstrate knowledge, practical skill, and readiness to advance. Assessments are designed to be rigorous, fair, and reflective of real horsemanship.

Virtual Support

Guild members have access to virtual support throughout their journey — guidance, feedback, and mentorship to help them succeed at every stage.

The Guild Passport

At each level, students work toward completing their Guild Passport — a record of achievement that tracks progress across the six disciplines and documents the skills, knowledge, and assessments completed at each stage of advancement.
